HISTORY

South Africa is the only country in the world that has legislation in place allowing non-certified aircraft to do commercial aerial work. The new South African Civil Aviation Authority should be complimented on their open attitude in this respect. The criteria needed to run non-type certified aircraft are very strict. Any operator wishing to obtain an Air Services Licence and operating certificate has to meet stringent conditions in order to satisfy the CAA and the Department of Transport that the Air Service can be performed in a safe manner.

Light Flight has been working closely with CAA officials over the past 5 years in drawing up new legislation, specifically Parts 62 and 96 of the Civil Aviation Legislation of 1997.

Light Flight Flying Services has been granted a Class 3 Air Service Licence, No G631D from the Department of Transport and has and Operating Certificate issued by the CAA.

Light Flight has blazed the trail in the use of microlights for aerial surveys. We operate the latest digital equipment available in the USA which is small and light enough to easily fit into advanced Ultralights. Because of the low operating and maintenance costs we can do work that was not previously economically viable. The current survey work being done is mostly agricultural - monitoring crops. We also do mapping for environmental purposes such as alien plant control. The third main type of surveys we do is for insurance purposes - forest fires, oil spills etc.

Trikes are becoming well known as good platforms for doing game counts, anti-poaching, fence patrols etc. The Tecnam is well suited to game counts. It has good short-field capabilities and the doors can be removed in 30 seconds.

We offer all types of Aerial Photography, using either Weight-Shift Trikes or our Fixed-Wing planes.

Microlights & Gyroplanes are being utilized in the world as recreational aircraft. At an all-up-weight of just 450 Kg and an 80 to 100 hp 4-stroke Rotax 912 series or Jabiru engines, they climb like rockets at the rate of 5 to 8 meters per second, a feat unparalleled even by higher powered single engine aircrafts. They can have a top speed of upto 220 kmph and a cruising speed of 175 kmph.
